How long does the application process take?
As a general rule, Social Security is not inclined to grant disability benefits. Therefore, the application process can take longer than you might expect.
The initial application for disability benefits can be done online. However, the initial application for SSI benefits or any other programs must be done in person. For this reason, we recommend that you contact us as soon as you decide that you want to apply for benefits, so we can help you complete the appropriate applications.
After you have applied, it generally takes approximately six months to get an initial decision, which is most often a denial. You have 60 days to appeal the denial and request a Reconsideration. It usually takes another four months to get a Reconsideration decision, which is usually a denial as well.
At that point, it is necessary to request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge. Most hearing offices take a year to schedule a hearing from the time you request it.
Sometimes there are things we can do to speed up this process, depending on what your doctors have to say, so it’s very important that you follow-through with your medical providers through the entire appeals process. Medical evidence is vital to winning your case.
